A few months ago we talked about an interesting looking Kickstarter project called Steam Hammer. The game in question is a steampunk-themed sandbox MMORPG that incorporates survival elements and promises a believable world. Well, as believable as a world filled with jet packs, Tesla guns, and steam-powered hammers can get. The game world is constantly being shaped by the players so there’s potential for a lot of realistic role-playing here. The developers of Steam Hammer have been hard at work since we last talked about the game and it looks like the project ended up being successfully funded. Not only that but the game just entered Early Access earlier today and is now available to play on Steam.
If you’ve played Life is Feudal or any other similar titles you’ll know what to expect here. Steam Hammer drops you into the game world with little more than the shirt on your back and it’s up to you to choose your own path. Building and crafting are important parts of the game so you’ll likely need to figure out early on what role you want to fulfill in this world as specialization seems crucial. It’s entirely up to you whether you choose to be a craftsman, industrialist, architect, conqueror or explorer. Alternatively, you can also go with a jack of all trades build and see where it leads you.
Steam Hammer features over 30 types of buildings and fortifications along with over 40 types of weapons and armor. All inspired by Victorian-era technology, of course. Since this is a steampunk-themed MMORPG, you can also expect a variety of steam-powered machinery and vehicles to play around with, including the mandatory zeppelins. In short, Steam Hammer sounds like a wet dream for anyone with an interest in all things steampunk, at least on paper. As mentioned, the game just hit Early Access so this is still very much a work in progress type of deal. And judging by how long these large projects take to complete, it’s probably going to be in development for some time.
