Modern Warfare Remastered didn’t exactly turn out to be the classic competitive FPS veterans of the genre were asking for. And while Battlefield 1 certainly lived up to all the hype, the game was clearly developed with modern audiences in mind, which makes it a less than ideal pick for anyone looking for an old-school military FPS. Don’t worry, though, because the upcoming Battalion 1944 promises to be an “old-school multiplayer WW2 shooter” with a focus on skill-based combat. After a highly successful Kickstarter campaign last year, Battalion 1944 managed to catch the eye of Square Enix Collective, who recently announced that they will now handle the publishing and distribution of the game.
According to developer Bulkhead Interactive’s Senior Game Producer Joe Brammer, the company actually received several offers from “other very big publishers” on Battalion 1944. Bulkhead ultimately decided to partner with Square Enix Collective, however, thanks in no small part to the fact that the two companies have already worked together in the past. Bulkhead Interactive’s previous title, The Turning Test, was also published by Square Enix back in 2016 on PC and it seems like everyone involved was happy with how things turned out. In other words, this is one of those ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ type of deals.
“From having partnered with Bulkhead before on the hugely successful The Turing Test, we know they’re a very talented studio making great games”, said Phil Elliott, Director of Community & Indie Development at Square Enix Limited. “We trust Joe and the team as we know what they’re capable of and we see them actively listening to their community. Our relationship is built on a foundation of minimum publisher interference with maximum support where needed. We’ll help nurture and grow the community while Bulkhead can focus on crafting a fantastic FPS experience with Battalion 1944”.
Battalion 1944 is scheduled to launch in May on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. For more information regarding the game check out the official website.
