2016 was a great year for turn-based strategy/tactics games thanks to titles like Civilization VI, Total War: Warhammer, and XCOM 2. We picked XCOM 2 as our favorite PC game of 2016 so the news that we would be getting a very similar game in the near future got us pretty excited needless to say. The game in question is Phoenix Point, a spiritual successor to the original X-COM that promises to bring the turn-based tactics genre back to its roots. Phoenix Point is still at least a couple of years away, but as of today, we know for certain that it’s coming because the game just surpassed its crowdfunding goal of $500.000 on Fig.
It’s worth noting that Pheonix Point managed to raise the sum in just a week thanks to almost 7.000 backers. And with 36 more days to go, there’s little doubt that the game will raise even more money until the campaign ends on June 8. Any extra revenue will be put to good use, however, because the developers have announced two additional stretch goals. The next goal is $650K, which will allow the developers to introduce drivable vehicles to the game while the second one aims for $850K and will add a floating base.
Phoenix Point is being developed by Snapshot Games, the creators of Chaos Reborn, another turn-based game that was also successfully funded through a crowdfunding campaign a few years back. The studio is based in Bulgaria and is headed by none other than Julian Gollop, the creator of the original X-COM: UFO Defense and one of its successors, X-COM: Apocalypse. Gollop worked on a number of other projects over the years but Phoenix Point seems to be his most ambitious work in quite a while. Needless to say, there are plenty of reasons to get excited for the upcoming game, especially given that the first batch of screenshots and artwork looks absolutely amazing. Make sure to check them out on the campaign page.
If you want to secure a copy of Phoenix Point ahead of time you’ll need to pledge at least $30. Included in that price are also a bunch of wallpapers, the game manual, and a copy of Chaos Reborn. Phoenix Point is set to release sometime during Q4 of 2018 exclusively on the PC.
