The Secret World was a very solid and yet often overlooked MMORPG that didn’t quite manage to gain mass appeal when it released back in 2012. The game did have a decent player base but was never as popular as it could have been due in no small part to its business model. Luckily, that won’t be a problem anymore because Funcom announced earlier this year that the MMO was switching to a free-to-play model and will be rebranded as Secret World Legends. According to a new announcement by the developer, it sounds like we can expect to be able to play the game sooner than we thought. Specifically, Secret World Legends is now officially scheduled to launch on June 26 via Steam.
In addition to the business model, Secret World Legends also brings to the table a number of other important changes. Firstly, the game is now being marketed as a “shared-world role-playing game”, which sounds similar to an MMORPG but the difference is that you can experience the story by yourself without being bothered by other players if you want to. That said, you can still team up with other players in order to overcome difficult challenges and continue to socialize in Agartha, the game’s central hub. Given that Secret World Legends is a very story-driven game – as was the original version – this sounds like a great change indeed.
Aside from that, returning players can also expect improvements to customization, missions, progression, combat, and more. The changes to the combat, in particular, are extremely welcome since the previous system was pretty outdated even at launch. The combat in Secret World Legends will reportedly be more fluid and action-oriented, with new unique mechanics for every weapon type. Secret World Legends is currently in its Closed Beta testing phase on Steam. If you’re interested in taking a look at the game before it launches next month make sure to sign up for the Closed Beta over on the official website.
