Phantom Dust Will Not End Up Like Scalebound According to Microsoft

By now I’m sure you’ve heard about Microsoft’s recent cancellation of Scalebound, one of the company’s top Xbox One/Windows 10 exclusives for 2017. The news came as a bit of shock to many gamers, especially since the title looked like it was already in the final stages of development judging by the footage revealed last year. Needless to say, more than a few people are pretty pissed at Microsoft right about now and are, understandably, beginning to wonder if perhaps Scalebound’s cancellation might spell trouble for some of the other exclusives scheduled to come out later this year. Games like Phantom Dust for example. While not quite as highly anticipated as Platinum’s axed title, Phantom Dust is definitely on the wish lists of many gamers and, according to Microsoft, still on track for a 2017 release.

The news comes directly from Microsoft’s own General Manager, Shannon Loftis, who recently confirmed on Twitter that Phantom Dust is “still in the pipe” and “going well.” As for the rather suspicious lack of recent updates and unexpectedly long development time, Loftis stated that remastering an original Xbox title takes a lot of work and the company wants to make sure that is it up to par with fan expectations. Unfortunately, the General Manager didn’t reveal any new details regarding the game but she did say that we should expect more information about Phantom Dust to arrive soon.

Back at E3 2014, Microsoft surprised its fans by announcing an Xbox One exclusive Phantom Dust remake in development at the now defunct Darkside Studios. The game in question was later canceled, however, the project was not entirely scratched as Microsoft later decided to create their own remastered version of the original Phantom Dust, which came out in March of 2005 for the Xbox. The remastered version is expected to feature dedicated servers and improved visuals, though specific details have yet to be announced.

Aside from releasing on the Xbox One, the new Phantom Dust will also be available on Windows 10 when it launches sometime later this year.
