Styx: Shards of Darkness is the successor to Cyanide Studios’ fairly well-received stealth game released in 2014, Styx: Master of Shadows. The upcoming title was initially meant to launch later this year for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, however, it was recently pushed back until the first quarter of 2017. According to the developers, the delay was caused by a desire to further polish the game and provide the best product possible for fans of stealth titles. In order to prove that those aren’t just empty statements, Cyanide revealed a gameplay trailer earlier today that showcases the current progress, as well as some of the new game mechanics and graphical improvements.
While the original wasn’t necessarily a bad looking game, Cyanide figured there’s always room for some improvements, which is why the company decided to develop Styx: Shards of Darkness using the Unreal Engine 4. In terms of new mechanics, Shards of Darkness will feature a crafting system that allows Styx to create a use a wide variety of useful items while the improved leveling system features some very neat abilities, including invisibility. Much like in Master of Shadows, however, the most efficient way of sneaking around quickly and quietly will be to use various aspects of the environment itself.
“In search for the Ambassador’s magical scepter stolen by a shape-shifting elf, Styx must infiltrate a diplomatic summit through clever use of the environment and new crafting abilities,” reads the description attached to the gameplay video. “A new feature, crafting, enables Styx to use more abilities, such as throwing a cocoon large distances enabling him to teleport into a newly hatched clone of himself. The series’ lauded verticality returns, with many choices of routes and tactics to take throughout the level. Stick to the shadows on the ground, avoiding patrols, or turn to the walls and ceilings to sneak past or attack from above. Kill, or subvert; the choice is yours – just don’t be seen!”
Pre-ordering Styx: Shards of Darkness for PC, PS4, or Xbox One will grant players exclusive access to the Akenash set, which includes the outfit and dagger our goblin protagonist used in Styx: Master of Shadows.
