Mass Effect Andromeda lead writer leaves the project in favor of Bungie

Mass Effect Andromeda loses yet another key member as lead writer Christopher Schlerf leaves Bioware in favor of Bungie. Although some fans of the series may find this news a bit upsetting, word has it that Schlerf left in good terms from the Canadian studio and that he completed his work on the game before moving on. In fact, some of his recent tweets suggest that he may have finished his work on Mass Effect Andromeda a while back but waited until now to make things public. It’s likely that Schlerf decided to wait until Bungie gave the green light before making the big announcement, which is definitely the smart and professional thing to do.

The writer says that he is very proud of his work at Bioware and even went as far as to call his previous gig “one of the best experiences of my career.” That said, he seemed very eager to begin working at Bungie, a studio where he will likely feel right at home given that Schlerf was the lead writer of Halo 4 at 343 Industries before joining Bioware to work on Mass Effect Andromeda and as we all know, Bungie also has a history with the Halo series. It’s easy to see why Schlerf would be a great asset to Bungie if the company ever decides to develop another Halo game, however, such a project is not in the works as far as we know, so we can only assume that Bungie hired Schlerf to work on Destiny instead. The game has indeed received plenty of criticism in the past for its rather weak narrative so here’s hoping that Bungie’s newest member can make some improvements in that department. At the same time, it’s also possible that Schlerf was actually hired to work on Destiny 2. Or maybe both. We’ll just have to wait and see.

As for Mass Effect Andromeda, the game is still on track for a late 2016 launch even without its lead writer. Schlerf didn’t give away anything newsworthy before leaving the project, however, he did mention that he is very excited to play the game once it comes out and that Mass Effect Andromeda “is really gonna blow people away.” I suppose a statement like that was to be expected but it’s enough to get us even more pumped for the upcoming game regardless.

News of Schlerf’s departure from Bioware comes just a couple of months after Chris Wynn, former Mass Effect Andromeda senior development director left the company as well. We also can’t forget about former creative director Casey Hudson, who left Bioware back in 2014 in order to pursue “other projects.” Last we’ve heard these projects involve working as creative director at Microsoft Studios on some very interesting things, including the HoloLens and a number of new Xbox titles.

All these recent departures might be a sign that something is amiss at Bioware, especially since all these people were working on Mass Effect Andromeda before they left. Then again, it’s hopefully just a coincidence that didn’t affect the development process too much. Delays are pretty common these days but here’s hoping that this won’t be the case here and that Mass Effect Andromeda can still make its release window. In the meantime, we’re still waiting for a better trailer for the game as we only got little bits and pieces until now and we’re desperately craving for more.
