DOTA 2 commentator, James Harding was fired by Valve

After only one day and a half since the DOTA 2 Shanghai major has started, Gabe Newell the co-founder and managing director of Valve made a huge decision that left fans wondering about what was the actual reason. James Harding, also known as “2GD” was fired without a clear explanation. Harding doesn’t have the greatest reputation because of his somewhat disrespectful way of commentating matches but there were a lot of people who found his sarcasm funny and loved him. He is one of those guys you either hate or love, depending on how easily offended you are. Although James Harding sometimes went too far with some commentaries, fans were not able to link any disrespectful moment from Shanghai that might have led to his release.

When asked for a reason, Gabe Newell, could only say that “James is an ass”. It appears that Harding might have had some issues with his employer behind the scenes because it is impossible to imagine that his way of presenting himself on camera was the only reason. The way James Harding acts on air didn’t seem to affect his professional career until now and even more, it made him stand out as an eSports commentator.

Gabe Newell, the CEO of Valve

“Two things: 1. James. We’ve had issues with James at previous events. Some Valve people lobbied to bring him back for Shanghai, feeling that he deserved another chance. That was a mistake. James is an ass, and we won’t be working with him again. 2. As long as we’re firing people, we are also firing the production company that we’ve been working with on the Shanghai Major. They will be replaced, and we hope to get this turned around before the main event.”

This is the only official statement made personally by Gabe Newell on Reddit to put an end to a lot of speculation that started going around. Unfortunately, it appears that Valve’s managing director doesn’t find James Harding suited for the job because of his personality. Also, Valve will fire the production company as well because Shanghai Major is a disaster because until today it had a lot of technical difficulties. Of course, Harding finds his termination of employment upsetting but he wants to take his time to put his facts in order before giving an official statement. Still that didn’t stop Harding from replying to Gabe Newell statement on Reddit with the following comment.

“This is why my statement is taking some time. It seems more personal than professional. So I will respond. Just for the record gabe, I don’t think you are an ass. But I don’t think you are right about me (well maybe you are a bit of an ass for calling me an ass, but let’s find out what others think shall we?). Brb.”

As we all know, James “2GD” Harding used to be a Starcraft 2 commentator before his transfer to DOTA 2. Although it is not a good moment to think about Harding’s future plans as we are still waiting for Harding’s statement, we can only think about him returning to the Starcraft 2 scene.
